Arrives fast, goes deep, then goes elsewhere
This pattern moves quickly through ideas and people, engaging intensely and then moving on when the interest does. It is drawn to what is underneath things and applies little sustained pressure to finish them. Presence here is genuine while it lasts, which is what makes the leaving confusing.
You will know this one is close if
- You went from knowing nothing about a subject to arguing about it competently in about four days, and have not opened it since.
- You gave a stranger at a party the conversation their oldest friends do not get, meant every word, and never followed up.
- There is a project sitting at eighty percent done that you still call unfinished rather than abandoned, and it has been months.
Two hits does not make it yours. It makes it worth the next two minutes.
At their best
- Goes three levels into a subject in an afternoon and comes back with something useful.
- Gives a stranger the kind of conversation most people reserve for old friends.
- Connects two people who needed each other and takes no credit for it.
- Abandons a bad idea instantly, with no attachment to having had it.
Under pressure
- Leaves a trail of things that were genuinely interesting for four days each.
- Is intensely present, then unreachable, and does not register the gap as a pattern.
- Prefers the new problem to the eighty percent finished one, every time.
- Reads a commitment as a description of current interest rather than as a promise.
Often misread
- Looks like it was not sincere. Usually complete sincerity with a short half-life, which is harder to plan around than insincerity.
- Looks like avoidance of depth. Usually the opposite, depth reached quickly and then exhausted.
- Looks like flakiness about people. Usually flakiness about schedules, which is not the same thing and is received as though it were.
Growing from here
None of this is fixed. Three things move this pattern specifically, and each one is written so that somebody who knows you would notice. Not resolutions. Things another person could actually watch you do.
- Put a dated next contact in the calendar before you leave the conversation, and be the one who honours it.
- Finish one thing sitting at eighty percent this month, badly if necessary, and tell someone it is now done.
- Say interested rather than yes when that is the truth, so nobody plans around a commitment you have not made.
