Northlight
Sits with the question long after everyone left
This pattern goes a long way into a small number of subjects, alone, without much urgency to arrive or to be heard. It is more interested in understanding something properly than in resolving it or acting on it. Solitude is the working condition rather than a retreat from anything.
You will know this one is close if
- You went back to a question you first met years ago, again, and have never mentioned it to anybody, because who would you tell.
- You understood a bad situation completely, at length, from several angles, and then did absolutely nothing about it.
- A friendship faded and you did not notice for months, because your side of the relationship had carried on happening in your head.
Two hits does not make it yours. It makes it worth the next two minutes.
At their best
- Still working on the question two years later, and further into it than anyone.
- Holds a genuinely uncertain position instead of picking a side to be finished.
- Says one sentence that reorganises what everyone else had been assuming.
- Is entirely unmoved by how popular an idea currently is.
Under pressure
- Understands the situation completely and does nothing whatsoever about it.
- Treats needing to be understood by others as a lapse rather than as a need.
- Lets a relationship lapse without noticing, because the internal one continued.
- Answers a practical question with the interesting version of it.
Often misread
- Looks like aloofness. Usually genuine absorption, which does not feel like a withdrawal from inside it.
- Looks like indecision. Usually a considered refusal to resolve something that is not yet resolvable.
- Looks like it does not need people. Usually it needs a very small number, very specifically, and says so rarely.
Growing from here
None of this is fixed. Three things move this pattern specifically, and each one is written so that somebody who knows you would notice. Not resolutions. Things another person could actually watch you do.
- Convert one thing you have understood into a single action this week, and tell the person it concerns what you did.
- Answer the practical question first, plainly, and offer the interesting version only if the other person asks for it.
- Message the friend you have not contacted in months, without an occasion, and be the one who starts it again.
