Signal

Says less than anyone, and means all of it

This pattern is quiet, self-contained, concrete and low-urgency, and it does not spend words or effort on anything it has not chosen. It is unusually hard to move by social pressure. What it does say is generally exactly what it thinks, at minimum length.

You will know this one is close if

  • A room reached a strong consensus, you were unmoved by it, and you did not feel any pull to say so or to join in.
  • Someone asked you what was wrong because of your face, and nothing was wrong, and explaining that felt like more effort than it was worth.
  • Something has mattered to you for a long time and nobody in your life knows it does, and you have not experienced that as hiding it.

Two hits does not make it yours. It makes it worth the next two minutes.

At their best

  • Is completely uninfluenced by a room that has collectively made up its mind.
  • Gives an answer that is short, accurate and free of any attempt to manage you.
  • Needs no maintenance, no reassurance, and no audience to keep going.
  • Notices the concrete detail everybody talked over.

Under pressure

  • Disengages rather than objects, and leaves nobody anything to work with.
  • Lets something matter for a long time without ever mentioning that it does.
  • Treats an explanation of itself as a cost not worth paying, so it is repeatedly misread.
  • Waits for a situation to change on its own past the point that was plausible.

Often misread

  • Looks like disapproval. Usually neutrality, which has almost the same face and none of the content.
  • Looks like nothing is happening. Usually a normal internal life with an unusually low export rate.
  • Looks like it does not want to be included. Usually it wants to be asked and not to be managed.

Growing from here

None of this is fixed. Three things move this pattern specifically, and each one is written so that somebody who knows you would notice. Not resolutions. Things another person could actually watch you do.

  • Say the one thing that matters to you out loud to somebody, once, even though explaining it costs more than staying quiet.
  • When someone misreads your silence, correct the reading in a sentence rather than deciding it is not worth the effort.
  • Object in the room when you disagree, briefly, instead of disengaging and leaving people nothing to work with.

Depth

The filled half is the side this pattern sits on, not a score. People land all over each line, and the test gives you your own place on it.

If you live or work with someone here

  • Ask a closed question. Open ones get short answers and it is not reluctance.
  • Say what you concluded from their silence, so a wrong reading can be corrected.
  • Invite without pressure and without reading the decline as final.
  • Give the information plainly; this pattern notices being handled immediately.

Inner and Rising

If this is your Inner read, very little of what happens internally has ever needed to be said, so the low output is not concealment. If it is your Rising read, five people built a picture from an unusually small sample, and the interesting part is what they filled the space with. This pattern is the one where Rising is most likely to be a reconstruction rather than an observation, which makes any agreement between the two unusually informative.

This is a pattern, not a box

Nobody sits exactly on a corner. A name like Signal is just the nearest recognisable shape to where a set of answers actually fell. Which is why AskFive will never tell you that you are a Signal. It tells you which one you came out closest to, and names the runner up. When the two are close enough to be a coin toss, it says so.

The nearest patterns

Each of these is one answer away. If you came out near a border, the gap between them is small, and your result will tell you that rather than pick for you.

Which one would your five name?

Four minutes gets you your own answer, free. The one your five would give is a different answer, and it is the only one you cannot work out on your own.
