How to communicate with a Meridian
Changing the mind of somebody who worked it out before the meeting started.
They came into Monday with the whole thing solved. No preamble, no options, one conclusion. When you asked a question about the middle of it, the answer had an edge on it, as though the question were a delay rather than a question.
What you did not see is the weekend. The problem was worked through alone, over two days nobody knew about, and the conclusion arrived already tested. Finding out that it also needed selling was the irritating part, and that irritation is what you met on Monday morning.
What is actually happening
This pattern thinks in systems, does the thinking in private, and arrives with a conclusion rather than with a discussion. The work is done alone because that is where it can be done, not because company is unwelcome. It will find the flaw in a plan that eleven people already approved.
It is loyal to what is correct over what is comfortable, and it does not soften much on the way out. That reads as coldness and it is closer to a budget: the attention went to the problem rather than to the room. It gives the same assessment to a senior person as to anyone else, which is the same trait costing a different amount.
The reasoning is invisible and the verdict is not. So what everybody receives is certainty, and the two days of doubt that produced it never make it into the room. Silence after the explanation gets read as the logic being accepted, when what usually happened is that three people stopped following at the fourth step.
What it costs, and who pays it
The cost lands on the people who were not brought through the middle. They cannot argue with a conclusion they cannot reconstruct, so they either take it on trust or they object on tone, and objecting on tone gets nowhere. Either way the plan ships without the check that a room full of competent people was supposed to provide.
There is a second cost and it is the expensive one. Being right in a way that costs more than being right was worth is a repeatable outcome here, not an accident. The human problem inside the system goes unaddressed while the system gets optimised around it, and the person who is that problem knows exactly what happened.
What to do differently
Send it in writing before you say it in a room.
A verbal ambush gets a worse answer than your question deserved, because the thinking has not been done yet and this pattern does not think out loud. Send it the day before and you get the considered version. Raise it cold in the meeting and you get the defended version.
SaySending this now so you have it before Thursday rather than in the room.
Argue with the reasoning and leave the tone out of it.
The reasoning is the part that is listening. A position here moves for evidence and refuses to move for consensus. An objection built on how the room felt only confirms that the room is the wrong input. Name the step you think is wrong and it will genuinely be reconsidered.
SayStep three is where I stop agreeing. Walk me through that one again.
Say when a decision is political rather than technical.
Otherwise this pattern will keep solving the wrong problem beautifully, and get more frustrated as each correct answer fails to land. Naming the real constraint is not cynicism here, it is the missing input. Without it you get an elegant solution to a question nobody was asking.
SayThis one is not going to be decided on the merits. It is a relationship problem.
Ask what would change their mind, out loud, in front of people.
It sounds combative and it is the opposite. A position held under real social pressure looks like stubbornness from outside. Naming the evidence that would move it shows the room a door that was always there. Leave it unsaid and the disagreement hardens into character rather than staying about the work.
When this goes wrong
The one it gets confused with
Both are rigorous, unsentimental, and hard to move with anything other than an argument, so they get confused constantly. The tell is where the thinking happens. Aurora thinks out loud at you, in the meeting, and you watch the position being built and sometimes abandoned in real time. Meridian thinks alone and then tells you the result. If you were present for the working out, that was an Aurora. If the answer arrived finished on a Monday, that was a Meridian.
The full description of this pattern, including what it looks like at its best and what it costs under pressure, is on the Meridian page.
Everything above is the outside view. It is written from where you are standing, watching a conclusion arrive, with no access to the work behind it.
The part this page cannot do
Everything above is the outside view. It is written from where you are standing, watching a conclusion arrive, with no access to the work behind it.
That is the specific hard part with this pattern. You are asked to judge a position whose reasoning was never shown to you, and you are guessing at the confidence behind it from the delivery alone. The people around you are doing something similar with your certainty, and they have drawn their conclusions quietly.
