How to communicate with an Ember

Getting a plan and a deadline out of somebody who is genuinely not worried.

The thing you both agreed to sort out has been eight months. You have raised it four times. Each time you got a warm, honest yes, and then nothing happened, and nothing bad happened either, which is why it is still there.

You have started reading that as not caring. It is not. This is a person who believes most things settle if they are not poked, and so far the evidence has been on their side. The problem is the one thing in the pile that was never going to settle on its own.

What is actually happening

This pattern is warm and close with a small number of people, and it stays that way over years without much maintenance. It deals in what is actually here rather than in what things mean. There is very little urgency in it, and that low urgency is the reason it lasts.

It is also why the plan never gets made. Making the plan is not something this pattern proposes. It is something it accepts, warmly, when somebody else brings it. If you are waiting to be invited, you will both wait, and neither of you is being cold.

When it is hurt, it goes quiet and expects the quiet to be read. That is the part that causes the most damage, because a hint is absorbed here and not returned. You will not be told plainly, and the silence is doing work you cannot see.

This pattern's side of each of the four questionshow much of you is for other people: this pattern sits on the for other people side. what you do with pressure: this pattern sits on the absorbs pressure side. where your energy comes from: this pattern sits on the energy from within side. how far past the surface you live: this pattern sits on the lives at the surface side.how much of you is for other peopleself-containedfor other peoplewhat you do with pressureabsorbs pressureacts on pressurewhere your energy comes fromenergy from withinenergy from the roomhow far past the surface you livelives at the surfacelives past the surface
Four lines, and the filled half is the side this pattern sits on. The cube gives a side rather than a position, so nothing here is drawn as a point.

What it costs, and who pays it

The cost lands on whoever needed the thing to move. You built a schedule on a yes, and the yes was real, and the date was never attached to it. So you are the one who chases, and after the fourth time you feel like the difficult one in the relationship for wanting an answer.

There is a slower cost and it lands on the friendship. A relationship thins here because reaching out stayed a thing for next week, month after month, and nobody decided anything. The person on the other end works out that they are always the one who calls first. That conclusion is what actually ends it, not a row.

What to do differently

  1. Be the one who makes the plan, and make it specific.

The reading is clear that a plan will be accepted warmly here and almost never proposed. A day, a time and a place gets a yes. An open offer to sort something out soon gets an equally warm yes and then nothing, because nothing was actually asked.

SayThursday the eleventh, seven o clock, the usual place. I have booked it.

  2. Attach a real date, and say plainly that it is a real one.

This pattern will wait out a problem that was never going to resolve on its own, and it cannot tell your preference from your deadline. If you do not distinguish them out loud, both get treated as preferences. That is not evasion, it is a genuine gap in the information you gave.

SayThis one has an actual deadline, not a preference. It has to be done by the twentieth.

  3. Say the hard thing in plain words and do not hint.

A hint is absorbed and not returned here. You will feel you have raised it, and it will not have registered as raised. Say the difficult sentence flatly once, and you will usually get a straight answer, because there is no defensiveness in the way.

SayI am going to say this bluntly rather than dance around it.

  4. Stop reading the low output of words as low investment.

Attachment here does not express itself as urgency, so the strength of it is genuinely invisible from outside. Keep scoring the relationship on how often you get messaged and you will conclude something false, and act on it. The two-year gap is not a gap to this pattern.

When this goes wrong

The one it gets confused with

Both are warm, quiet and practical, and neither makes much noise about what they do for people. The tell is timing. Lantern has already done it, usually before you noticed it needed doing, and you find out afterwards. Ember is waiting to be asked, and will say yes immediately and gladly when you do. If you are wondering why they did not offer, you are dealing with an Ember, and the offer was there the whole time behind a question nobody asked.

The full description of this pattern, including what it looks like at its best and what it costs under pressure, is on the Ember page.

Everything above is the outside view. It is written from where you are standing, reading somebody who does not signal, and filling in the rest yourself.

The part this page cannot do

Everything above is the outside view. It is written from where you are standing, reading somebody who does not signal, and filling in the rest yourself.

The specific difficulty with this pattern is that the constancy is the least remarkable thing about it from inside, and it is the thing you value most. So the signal you are looking for is not being sent, and its absence means nothing. Meanwhile the people close to you are reading your silences the same way, arriving at conclusions, and keeping them.
