How to communicate with a Halo

Getting a straight want out of somebody who waits to be offered it.

You sent the group invitation to eight people. Seven replied. The eighth said yes, came, was warm all evening, and has not been in touch since. You have replayed the evening twice looking for the moment it went wrong.

Nothing went wrong. There was something they wanted from that evening and they decided that asking for it would spoil it. Then they read your silence as the answer, filed it, and went home to think about it on their own.

What is actually happening

This pattern hears the thing under the sentence. It asks the second question, the one that gets the real answer, and it applies so little pressure that people tell it more than they meant to. That is why you have probably confided something to this person that you have not told anyone closer.

The traffic runs almost entirely one way. It rarely asks for its turn. When it wants something, it waits to be asked for it, and then it treats not being asked as a decision that has been made about it. No request was refused, because no request was ever put.

The quiet does two jobs and only one of them is visible. Withdrawal replaces objection here, and the withdrawal gets called patience by the person doing it. So the disagreement you never heard was real and it happened. It left the room inside somebody who had already decided that saying it would cost more than it bought.

This pattern's side of each of the four questionshow much of you is for other people: this pattern sits on the for other people side. what you do with pressure: this pattern sits on the absorbs pressure side. where your energy comes from: this pattern sits on the energy from within side. how far past the surface you live: this pattern sits on the lives past the surface side.how much of you is for other peopleself-containedfor other peoplewhat you do with pressureabsorbs pressureacts on pressurewhere your energy comes fromenergy from withinenergy from the roomhow far past the surface you livelives at the surfacelives past the surface
Four lines, and the filled half is the side this pattern sits on. The cube gives a side rather than a position, so nothing here is drawn as a point.

What it costs, and who pays it

The cost lands first on the person who thought a decision was agreed. You leave a conversation believing you have consent, and you are working off a silence. Weeks later you find out the objection existed the whole time, and by then it is no longer a note on a plan. It is a verdict on work you have already done.

The second cost lands on the person doing the noticing, and it compounds. This pattern carries other people's difficulty long after they have put it down. You told it about the row with your brother, resolved it in a fortnight, and forgot. It did not. Nobody has asked how it went for the one carrying that.

What to do differently

  1. Ask what they want, then stay quiet for longer than is comfortable.

The first answer will be a version of nothing much. The reading names the real requirement here: a direct question, and enough silence after it for a genuine answer to arrive. Fill that gap and you get the polite answer, and you will believe it.

SayWhat do you actually want here? I am going to shut up until you tell me.

  2. Invite them by name, not by open door.

An open invitation reads as not being wanted in particular, which is exactly how this pattern will file it. You meant come if you like. It heard nobody is expecting you. A named invitation costs you one extra sentence and removes the entire ambiguity.

SayI want you there specifically, not just anyone who is free. Are you coming?

  3. Say out loud that the disagreement is welcome, before you need it.

This pattern goes quiet instead of objecting, so the objection has to be made cheaper than the silence. Naming that in advance changes what the quiet costs. Leave it out and you will get agreement in the room, then the real position three weeks later.

SayIf you think this is wrong, say it now and I will not take it personally.

  4. Give the solitude back without reading it as a retreat.

Time alone after intense company is where the noticing gets processed here, and it is a requirement rather than a mood. Treat it as a withdrawal and you will chase, which turns a normal recovery into something that has to be managed and explained.

When this goes wrong

The one it gets confused with

Both are quiet, warm and undemanding, and both will sit with something difficult for a long time without trying to fix it. The tell is what the quiet is busy with. Ember is present with the thing as it is, and is not working on it. Halo is working out what it means, and is usually two steps ahead of the conversation. Ask what they made of something that happened last month. Ember will tell you what happened. Halo will tell you what it was about.

The full description of this pattern, including what it looks like at its best and what it costs under pressure, is on the Halo page.

Everything above is the outside view. It is written from where you are standing, watching somebody who does not narrate, and inferring the rest.

The part this page cannot do

Everything above is the outside view. It is written from where you are standing, watching somebody who does not narrate, and inferring the rest.

That inference is hard here for a specific reason: this is the pattern that takes in a great deal and lets almost none of it back out. From outside, that reads as serenity, and you have no way to check it. The people around you are doing the same arithmetic on your silences, and they are not going to tell you what they concluded either.
