How to communicate with a Comet
Making a plan with somebody whose commitment is a description of today.
They gave you two hours on a Tuesday that were better than anything you got from people who have known you for a decade. They went three levels into your problem and came back with something you actually used. Then you did not hear from them for six weeks.
You have spent some of those six weeks deciding it was not sincere. It was. That is the confusing part, and it is worth getting right before you say anything. The version where they were performing is the version that would be easier to be angry about.
What is actually happening
This pattern moves fast through ideas and people, engages completely, and moves on when the interest goes. The presence was real while it lasted. What ends is the attention, not the regard for you. From the inside those two feel like separate things. From where you are standing they plainly do not.
The mechanism that causes you trouble is how a commitment gets filed. A yes here describes current interest rather than a promise about a future Thursday. Nobody is being cynical. The word was accurate on the day it was said, and the calendar consequence of it was never really registered.
The last piece is the eighty percent problem. Under pressure this pattern takes the new problem over the nearly finished one, every time. There is a project sitting almost done that is still called unfinished rather than abandoned. It has been months. It will keep being months.
What it costs, and who pays it
The cost lands on whoever is holding the other end of the plan. You built a week around a general intention, and the intention evaporated without anybody deciding to break it. You are then in the worst position for a complaint, because nothing was formally broken and you feel unreasonable for minding.
There is a slower cost and it is the one that changes relationships. After two or three disappearances you stop taking the intense version seriously while it is happening. You start discounting the two hours on the Tuesday as they happen. That was the only genuinely good thing on offer, and you are now getting nothing from either mode.
What to do differently
Get a date in the calendar before the conversation ends.
A general intention has no mechanism behind it here, and the reading names the dated next contact as the growth edge. Ask for it while you are still in the room and the interest is still live. Ask afterwards by message and you are competing with whatever is currently more interesting.
SayBefore you go, put a date in for the follow-up. Any Thursday. I just want it in the diary.
Ask for interested rather than yes, and mean it.
This pattern will say yes truthfully and you will hear a promise. Offering the weaker word out loud gives an accurate answer somewhere to land, which is the whole point. What you lose is a commitment you were never going to get. What you gain is a plan built on the real number.
SayYou do not have to commit. Just tell me whether you are interested or actually in.
Hand over the start and give the finish to somebody else.
Three levels deep in an afternoon is genuinely rare and it is the thing worth buying. The last twenty percent is where this pattern reliably stalls, and assigning it here means the work sits almost complete for months. Split it deliberately and you get the strength without the stall.
SayTake it to the first draft and then hand it to Priya. She will take it home.
Say the disappearance hurt, plainly, once.
The reading is direct that this is usually genuinely unknown. Intensity is felt from inside and the gaps between are only visible from where you are standing. Said once, without a case attached, it registers as new information. Said as an accusation, it becomes an argument about whether the caring was real, and that argument goes nowhere.
SayWhen you went quiet after that week, it stung. I do not think you knew that.
When this goes wrong
The one it gets confused with
Both are pulled towards what is underneath a question rather than its surface. Both can go further into a subject in an afternoon than the people who own it. The tell is the calendar. Northlight is still on the same question two years later and is further into it than anyone. Comet has visited that question and about forty others. If they can pick a thread back up from three years ago without warming up, you are not dealing with a Comet.
The full description of this pattern, including what it looks like at its best and what it costs under pressure, is on the Comet page.
Everything here is the outside view. You are reading a pattern across time, from a distance, and guessing at what drives it.
The part this page cannot do
Everything here is the outside view. You are reading a pattern across time, from a distance, and guessing at what drives it.
The difficulty is structural. Intensity is only available from inside, and intermittency is only visible from outside, so the two of you are looking at genuinely different evidence. Nobody has both halves. The people around you are assembling a pattern out of your gaps right now, and none of them are going to say what they concluded.
