How to communicate with a Northlight
Getting a usable answer from somebody who is still thinking, and would rather keep thinking.
You asked whether the vendor contract should be renewed. Twenty minutes later you have a genuinely interesting account of why the whole category of vendor relationship is misconceived. You still do not know whether to renew it.
The other thing you have noticed is the silence. You asked a question in a meeting and got nothing for eleven seconds, and you filled it, and afterwards you were told you had cut them off. From the inside nothing had stopped. They were still working.
What is actually happening
This pattern goes a long way into a small number of subjects, alone, with very little urgency to arrive at an answer or to be heard having one. Understanding something properly matters more than resolving it. That is the source of the twenty minute answer: the interesting version is the live one, and the practical version had already been filed as settled and dull.
Under pressure the failure is not confusion, it is stalling. The situation gets understood completely, from several angles, and then nothing whatsoever happens about it. From outside that looks like indecision or disagreement. It is usually neither. The analysis simply never converted into an action, and no part of the process flagged that it had not.
The absorption is the piece people get wrong most often. It reads as aloofness and it does not feel like withdrawal from inside. A relationship can lapse here without being noticed for months, because the internal version of it carried on happening the whole time. Nothing was decided about you. Nothing was decided at all.
What it costs, and who pays it
The cost lands on whoever needed the decision. You brought a live problem and got an education, and the problem is still live, and now it is late. The quality of the thinking is not in doubt. What you needed was a yes or a no by Friday, and the machinery here is not pointed at Friday.
The heavier cost lands on the small number of people this pattern actually needs. It needs few, specifically, and says so rarely, so the people in that group are running on almost no confirmation. A friendship fades and the fading is not registered on this side for months. On the other side it registered immediately, and was read as a verdict.
What to do differently
Ask the real question, not the polite one.
Social questions get thin answers here and real ones get long ones, and the thin answer is not reluctance. If you open with how are things you will get three words and conclude wrongly. Ask the thing you actually want to know and the same person will talk for an hour.
SayI do not want the small talk version. What is the problem you have been chewing on this month?
Attach the reason to the deadline.
A bare deadline reads as an interruption to work that is still in progress. A deadline with a fact behind it is just another constraint, and constraints get absorbed. Say why Friday is Friday and you will usually get Friday. Say only Friday and you have started a negotiation you did not intend.
SayI need it by Friday because the board pack locks at nine on Monday. That is the whole reason.
Stop filling the silence.
The reading is blunt about this: the pause is usually still working. Filling it does not rescue an awkward moment, it interrupts a sentence that was being built. Wait past the point where it is comfortable. The thing that arrives after fifteen seconds is routinely better than anything your interruption would have produced.
Ask for the practical answer first and the interesting one after.
This is the growth move from the reading and it works because it is a sequence rather than a refusal. You get the decision you came for, and the analysis stays available instead of being cut off. Reverse the order and you will run out of meeting before the decision arrives.
SayGive me the plain answer in one line first. Then tell me why it is more complicated than that.
When this goes wrong
The one it gets confused with
Both think alone, both go deep, and both will disappear into a problem for a week without updating anybody. The difference shows up at the end. Meridian needs to arrive somewhere and will keep pushing until there is a conclusion it can act on. Northlight is comfortable leaving the question open for another two years, because arriving was never the point. If you are being handed a decision you did not ask for, you are dealing with a Meridian.
The full description of this pattern, including what it looks like at its best and what it costs under pressure, is on the Northlight page.
This page is the outside view. It describes what is visible of somebody whose activity is mostly not visible.
The part this page cannot do
This page is the outside view. It describes what is visible of somebody whose activity is mostly not visible.
That is the specific difficulty here. The gap between what is going on internally and the evidence of it that reaches you is wider here than with any other pattern. You are inferring a great deal from a very small export. Worth sitting with: somebody is doing the same arithmetic on your quiet, with the same thin sample, and they will not tell you the answer they got.
